One Nation, One Board , One Entrance Exam really ?

Our HRD Minister Kapil sibal recently introduced a proposal to make one board across the nation. He has introduced the idea of One Nation, One Education Board which will see students across the country study same subjects and write the same examination.

On the same line it was discussed to have a single entrance exam like for engineering. (Efforts are underway to hold a single national-level entrance test for students to get admission into engineering, medical and commerce courses from 2013, HRD minister Kapil Sibal on 16
th Fab 2010. "Efforts will be put to hold an All-India national test in science and commerce from 2013. This will smoothen the admission process into engineering, medical, economics and commerce courses," Sibal said, addressing a meeting of the Council of School Board of Education (COBSE) here. He said this will reduce burden on students who are appearing in multiple-tests for admission)

Do you think effort has been made to make this dream come true in 2013?

Recent News: CCB has increased the counseling participation fee for the universities from Rs.2.50 lakh to Rs.10 lakh this year. Many universities /colleges have opted out from CCB.
However it is not very clear why these universites have opted out from CCB Counselling . But according to news i
t seems universites are not happy with Money hike.

Whatever may be the reason the students are suffering due to this CCB action as they have to fill separate form, need to pay extra and need to attend separate counseling.

So, is this a action to unite the Universities
in a single window or is it going other way ?

HC refuses to stay declaration of results of IIT-JEE

The Delhi High Court today refused to stay declaration of results of prestigious IIT Joint Entrance Examination for 2010-11 on the allegations that there were errors in instructions in question papers and a faulty marking system was adopted by the organising committee for the tests.

The High Court also declined to give a direction to IIT for holding the examination afresh.

"We are dismissing the applications (for staying the declaration of results and conducting afresh the entrance tests)," a Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta said on two separate PILs filed in this regard.

The results were scheduled to be declared on May 26.

However, the court kept the petitions filed on the issue pending by directing the IIT's organising committee for JEE to demonstrate before it on June 2 the software adopted for evaluation of answer sheets.

CBSE Class XI Admissions through CGPA System

CBSE Class XI AdmissionThe Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has finally declared its Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system, the key policy governing allocation of streams in Class XI.A formal notification regarding the same will reach all schools by Monday.

The score card of all qualifying students will have a grade point for individual subject, a cumulative grade which will be equivalent to the aggregate percentage and an appropriate multiplier that will help schools to break the ‘tie’ situation and get the actual performance of every student.

“We had got a query from the DPI (S) of Chandigarh, who expressed his apprehension over the admission process to be followed with large number of students expected to get the same grade. We have informed him that we would be out with CGPA within next two days and it would be the governing rule for all admissions. It’s a pilot test and hope it works well,” Said, Rama, Public Relations Officer, CBSE.

Certain private schools have ironically filled almost 95 per cent of their sets on provisional basis using pre-boards marks as the key criteria. According to educationists most of the parents speculating confusion over admissions played it safe by admitting their children even before declaring of the board results.

The private schools when apprised of this system said that it was too late to adopt it as the board results are just a few days away, though the government institutions would go by the CBSE directives.

CBSE Board Exams Optional for Class X

                                                               Optional Board Exams

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reportedly advised city schools not to encourage students to take the exams for the 2010-11 session.

The advisory gains significance considering most CBSE schools in the city run till Class X.

Even the Kendriya Vidyalayas have been asked to conduct Class X assessments at the school level. “For schools
that run till Class XII, the examination process for Class X will be totally internal in 2011,” said an official with the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.
“None of the students in my school will appear in the board examination. For those willing to take the exams, I will try and convince them to go in for school-based assessments,” said Rita Chaterjee, principal, Apeejay School.

Kota helpline for students soon

In what could possibly be a first-of-its-kind initiative by the administration to help thousands of engineering and medical aspirants who suffer from exam-related stress, the Kota district collector has decided to set up a 24X7 call centre in the city.

In addition to this, a panel of experts would also be available to counsel anxious students. A coaching hub, Kota of late has reported student suicides due to severe examination pressure. A few months ago, a PMT aspirant from Patna, who was taking coaching from a reputed institute hanged herself, unable to cope up with the peer pressure.

The call center, which is expected to start functioning from the first week of June, would have two people in three shifts of eight hours each. It would attend to the problems of callers, and accordingly refer them to the concerned expert for a one-to-one counselling.

District collector, Kota, T Ravikant told TOI, “As students, we all have had butterflies in our stomach before the exams. Kota has a large number of students preparing for some of the toughest examinations every year. In such stressful situations, they need support from someone other than their parents and teachers, with whom they can share their feelings.”

He said since most of these aspirants are between the age group of 16 and 19, they are vulnerable to stress and depression, academics being a major reason for it. “After a sudden rise in stress-related suicides, we realized the immediate need for such a service” he said.

While a panel of doctors and experts is under constitution, the collector has also invited applications from candidates who are willing to work at the call centre. A few volunteers have already contacted him and shown keen interest to become a part of the initiative. “The service is not just meant for IIT-JEE and PMT aspirants, but for all school and college students,” said Ravikant.

Super 30 demands fresh IIT-JEE, rejects remedial steps

Super 30, a Bihar-based free coaching centre for the poor, has demanded that the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) be conducted again following blunders in the Hindi version and has rejected remedial measures proposed by the exam board.
A day after the Joint Admission Board of IIT-JEE devised multi-pronged remedial measures, including scaling up the marks of affected candidates, Anand Kumar, director-cum-founder of Super 30, said the corrective steps was not a fair solution.

"It will be injustice to the affected candidates," Kumar told IANS here.

He said that it would severely hamper chances of those who attempted the question paper in Hindi and urged the exam board to conduct a fresh examination.

"I again demand that a fresh examination be held because there is no other solution in view of blunders that can hit the prospects of hundreds of students from Hindi-speaking states," Kumar said.

The entrance exam to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology was held April 11.

The IIT-JEE board Sunday evolved corrective measures to ensure that genuine candidates were not affected by the errors in the exam. It formulated a point-by-point remedial action and posted the same on the IIT-JEE website.

Kumar, however, said the corrective measures would not help as the errors in the instructions of the Hindi version of the question papers would cost students 48 marks.

He added that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had also demanded a re-conduct of the IIT-JEE 2010 after the errors were detected in the Hindi version of the question paper.

JEE-2010 Corrective Measures

CORRECTIVE MEASURES FOR THE ERRORS ENCOUNTERED IN JEE-2010

Around 4.72 lakh candidates appeared in JEE 2010 on April 11, 2010. Certain errors in the question papers as well as in the ORS came to light immediately. The IITs sincerely regret the hardships that the candidates may have faced during the examination. The Joint Admissions Board held an emergency meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, 2nd May 2010 to arrive at appropriate corrective measures.
The Board observed unanimously that the situation does not warrant the holding of any re-examination and that the remedial measures outlined below will adequately redress the concerns of students arising out of the present situation:

Error 1: The subject headings Physics and Mathematics in the ORS are interchanged.
Corrective Measure: Each ORS (both for Paper 1 & Paper 2) will be evaluated in two ways (sequential question number-wise and subject headings-wise). In each case the higher score of the two evaluations will be taken as the candidate's score. Should one of the ways of evaluating lead to a mark below the minimum qualifying mark in one of the subjects, the other way will be deemed to be the ‘higher’ of the two scores.

Error 2: Question 44 in the Mathematics section of Paper 1 in code 4 of the Hindi version was not printed.
Corrective Measure: The ORS of the candidates who were given Code 4 of the Hindi version of the Question Paper 1 will be evaluated omitting Question 44 and the overall score for the Mathematics section of Paper 1 of those candidates will be appropriately scaled.

Error 3: The Instructions on “Question Paper Format and Marking Scheme” for section IV in the Hindi version of Paper 2 was wrongly printed. Each question in this section was shown to carry 3 marks instead of 8.
Corrective Measure: Each question of section IV of Paper 2 will be evaluated for 8 marks.

Error 4: In a few cases the question paper contained two unreadable pages and two partially readable pages in the Physics section of Paper 1.
Corrective Measure: Since the registration numbers of these candidates have been taken note of at the time of the examination, their ORS will be evaluated omitting the unreadable questions and their scores for the Physics section of Paper 1 will then be appropriately scaled.

The Joint Admissions Board decided to implement the above measures and to continue to monitor the situation till the process of Admission to IITs/ IT BHU and ISM Dhanbad through JEE 2010 is completed.

AIEEE to go Online from 2011

AIEEE Online

Taking a cue from the Common Admission Test (CAT), the Central Board of School Education (CBSE) is planning to take its All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) online from next year. However, this would be a much more challenging proposition, as compared to the 2.5 lakh aspirants who appeared for the not-so-successful online CAT last year, AIEEE will have 11 lakh students in over 3,000 exam centres.

The Indian Express has learnt that both the CBSE, which conducts the exam, and the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry under which the Board falls are working out finer modalities to take AIEEE online. AIEEE scores determine admissions to the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) besides various under-graduate engineering and architecture courses.

“It is now being mulled whether we should do it as a pilot test next year at some centres or just make a one-time switch to an online exam. While there is a view that we should just make a big switch, others are suggesting a more cautious approach especially since the CAT debacle. We will, anyway, have to switch to an online format considering the sheer number of candidates appearing for the AIEEE each year,” said a highly-placed source. Before taking AIEEE online, the response to the CBSE’s on-demand online Class X Board exam will also be observed, said the sources.

Serious mistakes in IIT-JEE 2010

IT-JEE 2010 Mistakes

A clever student can get 93 marks without any preparation

A senior IIT professor has pointed out ‘‘serious blunders’’ in this year’s IIT-JEE test that concluded on Sunday. He claims a clever student can get 93 marks without any preparation.

The claim was made by Rajeev Kumar, professor of computer science, IIT Kharagpur. IIT-Madras, which conducted the JEE has, however, disputed his claim. Kumar has been pointing out problems with JEE for the past four years and has even gone to the Delhi High Court.

Indians knew gravity laws 500 yrs before Newton!!!!!!!!!!

Ancient Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya, in his book Siddhanta Shriromani, had defined laws of gravity in 12th century, 500 years before Newton defined them for us. The speed of light was known to Indians since Vedic period, centuries before it was calculated by the Western world.
